Letter to my eldest child
'To my eldest child,
I hope I’m doing ok. I wish you could know how hard I’m trying.
Some days, I think I might have it.
Other nights, I come in after you’ve fallen asleep, lie down and whisper ‘sorrys’ into your ear as my tears soak your pillow. Hoping you might wake so I can tell you I will try harder tomorrow.
I promise.
Praying you’re still so small, you won’t remember these broken days where I have been less than you need. Silenced your little voice beneath my yelling.
My frustration.
My utter exhaustion.
I’ve never done this before, so maybe sometimes I seem unsure.
I am. That must be scary.
Your siblings will have an easier road. A sturdier leader. It won’t be fair.
But you, my darling, are why I keep rising.
Why I keep growing. Why I will never stop trying.
So, I promise you, my darling –
I will try harder tomorrow.'
